Manga Saga

All Getter Robo manga fit into one continuity, though many contain different casts and antagonists. Though the series would stop for years at a time, it still continues to this day, despite its primary author's passing.

Getter Robo (1974-1975)

Part 1 (Volumes 1-3) When the Dinosaur Empire, led by Emperor Gore, appears to reclaim the Earth; Professor Saotome utilizes an experimental new energy from outer space, the Getter Rays, to power various super weapons. The pinnacle of his research is the Getter Robo, a giant mech comprised of three individual jets that can combine to form three different configurations.

But many have died piloting the Getter Robo prototypes, so Professor Saotome embarks to find three suitable pilots.

Part 2 (volumes 4-5) Much of Gore's empire was destroyed in a tragic battle against Getter-3's pilot, Musashi, when he fought alone in Getter Robo and sacrificed himself. As a result, the original Getter Robo was destroyed. Saotome completes his latest model, the Getter Robo G. Even with only two pilots, Getter Robo G tears through the remaining enemy's forces in one last conflict. But before a victor can be decided, a new enemy appears: Emperor Burai and his Hyakki Empire.

Primary Characters

Ryouma Nagare (流竜馬): A talented martial-artist. Leader of his deceased father's member-less dojo, shunned due to its violent and unorthodox approach, Ryouma wanders aimlessly through life.

Hayato Jin (神隼人): A borderline psychotic murderer and terrorist with an amazing intellect, Hayato Jin seeks to overthrow the current government. Holed up in an abandoned school building, he is approached by Ryouma Nagare, who now works for Professor Saotome...

Musashi Tomoe (巴武蔵): After an extended period of training on Daisetsu mountain, he meets Ryouma and is taken back to the Saotome Research Institute. When a sortie is called, he steals the third jet and forcibly pilots Getter-3. After proving himself capable, he is accepted as the official third member.

Benkei Kurama (車弁慶): The third pilot recruited for Getter Robo G. He replaces Musashi in Getter-3.

Professor Saotome (早乙女博士): An esteemed scientist obsessed with Getter ray research. He stops at nothing to accomplish his goals and views death as a sacrifice necessary in his field of work. Pilots Getter-3 before they recruit Musashi.

Getter Robo Go (1991-1993)

Sixteen years after the completion of Getter Robo, Ken Ishikawa revived the series with Getter Robo Go. This series, and all after until Ishikawa's death, are done without Go Nagai(he is still credited as original creator).

As the mad scientist Rando declares his mission for world domination, Hayato Jin forms a brand new Getter team to pilot his Getter Robo.

This series marks the debut of the Shin Getter Robo.

Getter Team

Go Ichimonji (一文字號): A teenager with no direction in life. Physically gifted, but an underachiever.

Sho Tachibana (橘翔): A gifted pilot and exceptional soldier. Daughter of Professor Tachibana.

Gai Daido (大道凱): A mechanic at NISAR. Known for his almost obsessive love of machines, he holds a very special place in his heart for the Getter Robo. He claims that it's quite easy to love a machine.

NISAR

Hayato Jin (神隼人): Leader of NISAR's military section and creator of the Getter Robo Go. A former pilot of Getter himself, he is unable to pilot due to injuries from many years ago.

Professor Tachibana (橘博士): Co-developer of Getter Robo Go and Sho's father.

VEGA ZONE

Rando (ランドウ): Once a highly revered scientist by many of the world's nations. After disappearing for many years, he now returns with plans of world domination.

Shin Getter Robo (1999)

Prequel to Getter Robo Go. It takes place almost directly after the original Getter Robo series.

While Professor Saotome completes his masterpiece, the Shin Getter Robo, a strange object enters the Earth's atmosphere. Hayato, in control of the lab while Saotome obsessively works, orders Getter Robo and Getter Robo G to launch and destroy the object before it impacts.

Getter Robo Āḥ (2002-2004)

Set in a post-Apocalyptic Earth, Hayato Jin continues to lead the Saotome Research Institute after the events of Getter Robo Go. He has completed Professor Saotome's masterpiece prototype, the Shin Getter Robo, with a more stable creation: Getter Robo Āḥ. Humans and reptilians have joined against a common foe: The Andromeda Flow Country (アンドロメダ流国, Andoromeda Ryōkoku).

This story goes deeper into the Getter Emperor mythos.

Hayato Jin(神隼人): Now the authority on Getter. Leader of the fortified Saotome Research Institue and its many Getter Robo.

Takuma Nagare(流拓馬): Ryouma's son. Pilot of Getter Robo Āḥ(ゲッターロボアーク).

Kamui(カムイ): A half reptilian. Pilot of Getter Robo Hrīḥ(ゲッターロボキリク).

Baku Yamagashi(山岸獏): A monk and Messiah Tayrr's brother. Pilot of Getter Robo Hāṃ(ゲッターロボカーン).

Getter Robo Hien (2007-2008)

A new series taking place after Getter Robo Go and before Getter Robo Āḥ. Hayato has now relocated back to the Saotome Lab with another model of Getter Robo, based on plasma. The world has been overrun by plant-like lifeforms.

The new Getter Robo is very unique in that, later in the series, it has both a small plasma reactor and a Getter reactor.

Apocrypha Getter Robo DASH (2008-current)

Animation

Getter Robo (1974)

Same overall plot as the first half of the original manga, but with major changes to the characters in terms of past and personality. Each character was made to be TV friendly, and the Getter Rays are mostly benign.

Ryouma Nagare(流竜馬): A high school soccer player, pilot of Getter 1.

Hayato Jin(神隼人): A rebel loner who plays the harmonica, pilot of Getter 2.

Musashi Tomoe (巴武蔵): Judo captain of his high school club. Pilot of Getter 3.

Professor Saotome(早乙女博士): Premier researcher of Getter rays and the creator of Getter Robo.

Michiru Saotome(早乙女ミチル): Professor Saotome's daughter.

Genki Satome(早乙女元気): Professor Saotome's young son.

Getter Robo G (1975)

Covers the second half of the 1974 manga.

Benkei Kurama(車弁慶): New pilot of Getter 3 (Getter Poseidon). A little league coach.

Getter Robo Go (1991)

TV series featuring a new Getter Robo and a new team. Considered a flop. Has no relation to the manga outside of the titular robot and team (which are only similar in character design).

Getter Robo Go: A new Getter that utilizes plasma.

Go Ichimonji (一文字號)

Shou Tachibana (橘翔)

Gai Daidou (大道凱)

Shin (Change!!) Getter Robo: The Last Day of the World (1998)

Shin (Change!!) Getter Robo: Last Day of the World (真(チェンジ!!)ゲッターロボ 世界最後の日 Shin(Change!!)Getter Robo Sekai Saigo no Hi, also known as Getter Robo Armageddon) is a retro styled OVA following the continuity of a radio drama, the moon wars, with scenes and characters influenced by Shin Getter Robo and Maju Sensen(Another Ishikawa work). The characters are close to their manga counterparts, and characters designs reflect this.

Ryouma Nagare has been jailed for the murder of Professor Saotome, after the death of Michiru Saotome in a failed combination of Getter Robo. The rest of the Getter team (Musashi, Benkei and Hayato) have gone their own ways after the threat of the invaders has been exterminated. To the surprise of all, Professor Saotome has been reported to still be alive, and with a new Getter: The Shin Getter Robo. Thus starts his revenge.

Shin Getter Robo vs Neo Getter Robo (2000)

Shin Getter Robo vs Neo Getter Robo (真ゲッターロボ対ネオゲッターロボ) is an alternate universe sequel to the 1974 manga. It begins with Musashi's last stand, which is almost completely identical to the manga, except Hayato and Ryouma (shortly after regaining his memory) are seated in Shin Getter Robo as Professor Saotome struggles to active it. After the extinction of the Reptilian Empire, the focus switches to the Neo Getter team.

This OVA is a mixture of 1974 Getter Robo, Shin Getter Robo, Getter Robo Go TV and Getter Robo Go manga loosely in terms of events. While it covers some plot elements from each, its in no way a complete representation of each story.

Ryouma Nagare(流竜馬)

Hayato Jin(神隼人)

Musashi Tomoe (巴武蔵)

Professor Saotome(早乙女博士)

Go Ichimonji (一文字號)

Shou Tachibana (橘翔)

Gai Daidou(大道剴)

New Getter Robo (2004)

A re-imaging of Getter Robo. Professor Satome creates the Getter Robo to combat the threat of the Oni, once mythical creatures from Japanese folklore. But all pilots of previous Getters have died from the strain or battle. He embarks to find three pilots that can match the Getter Robo.

Undoubtedly the truest production to the manga. This OVA starts out with the events from the first half of the 1974 manga and then follows a loose interpretation of Shin Getter Robo.

Ryouma Nagare(流竜馬): Owner of a failing karate dojo hounded by loan sharks. A bloodthirsty street fighter.

Hayato Jin(神隼人): Leader of a terrorist group determined to uncover the government's secrets concerning Getter rays. A genius, murderer and psychopath hell bent on his goals, Hayato stops at nothing to get what he wants.

Benkei Musashibo (武蔵坊弁慶): A bandit turned monk who lives on Daisetsu mountain. A combination of Musashi Tomoe and Benkei Kurama.

Professor Saotome (早乙女博士): Creator of Getter Robo. A ruthless man who's utterly obsessed with Getter itself.

Michiru Saotome (早乙女ミチル): Saotome's daughter. The authority on the Oni from her research of dead bodies and remains. Has little interest in Getter rays.
