Gunbuster

Gunbuster, known in Japan as Aim for the Top! Gunbuster (トップをねらえ!, Toppu wo Nerae!?) is a six episode anime OVA series created by Gainax in 1988.

Created back in Gainax's early days, Gunbuster is essentially a sports show/super robot parody that eventually turns into an actual super robot show, with things like time dilation and universal immune systems thrown in.

The basic plot involves your typical otoku loser ending up as robot pilot. The big twist being the otoku loser is a female. Noriko through the guidance of her godly Coach becomes a capable super robot pilot through "COURAGE, HARD WORK, AND GUTS!". And helps save the earth from countless amount of space monsters. The ending of Gunbuster is quite notable, and liked, despite the animation budget being mostly gone by that stage. When someone refers to "LOL GAINAX" endings, Gunbuster isn't the most often referred to, but it still qualifies on some levels.

Sly jibs aside, many see Gunbuster as the defining super robot show of the 80's.
